We Have Been Busy!

It seems like I haven’t had much time this summer to post a new entry on this blog!

Let’s see what we have been up to…

Gymboree Class
Gymboree is a really fun place to bring kids. It is a scheduled time each week that is filled with songs, dance, exercise, socialization, and just plain fun. The classes are broken up by age level, so Ethan is in Level 3 (ages 10-16 months old).

The room is filled to the brim with brightly colored slides and tunnels and bridges… basically, every kids dream. Except for Ethan. Ethan hates it. Leave it to our kid to be the only kid in the entire class that despises Gymboree. Every other kid runs around like maniacs, while Ethan stands there in disbelief. Part of me wants to think that it’s because Ethan is so much more intelligent than those other children and he realizes how silly it all is. Haha. However, I know that it’s probably because it’s just so overwhelming in there.

Ethan has been to two classes so far. The first one was a disaster, full of crying and whining. The second class went slightly better and the whining diminished for the most part. We are hoping that by the end of the sessions, he will be really excited to be there. We’ll see.

Swim Class
We are still doing Ethan’s swim class once a week and thankfully, Ethan has a blast there! He is such a water baby. He has had four classes already and in that time he has learned how to go under water, kick his legs, and climb up the wall. I am just relieved that he enjoys it more than Gymboree!

Occupational Therapy
(I will discuss this in detail in another post)
Ethan’s occupational therapist has been coming once a week for an hour at a time. Miss Lori really works well with Ethan and he has been warming up to her. She has been doing “graded” texture activities with him. We have done shaving cream (which he hated), dried rice (which he tolerated only somewhat), dried beans (which seemed okay), and a few other tactile games. Miss Lori has showed us how to “brush” his body, which is something that helps him organize his thoughts. More on this whole topic in another post.

Fourth of July
We had big plans for Ethan’s first real Fourth of July. Parades and picnics and barbecues and general fun. So, what did we do? We went to a diner, ate some cold breakfast while Ethan threw Cheerios at the ladies sitting next to us, and went home. It rained and poured the whole holiday weekend. No way were we going to sit in the rain to watch a parade. Talk about “raining on my parade”, huh?

We are hoping that next year is a tad more exciting, full of hamburgers and fireworks.

Doctor’s Appointment
Ethan had his one year appointment at the pediatrician. We were so excited for this so we could find out how much he had grown. He is 31 inches tall (80-90%) and 22 pounds (30-40%). So, basically, he is tall and skinny, which you would never know by looking at him. He is really solid and looks heavier than what he is! Who knows where he gets his height from because neither of us are tall!

We discussed with the doctor about which vaccinations we are delaying and he was really open and understanding to all of it. I think he was pleased with how educated we are on the topic.

All in all, Ethan appears to be one healthy little boy!!! Yay!

The Rest of This Week
We have a busy few days coming up. Tomorrow, the three of us are headed to a local amusement park, Dutch Wonderland. It is supposedly a great place for toddlers. I will definitely take pictures!
Friday we will be headed to a local swim club to take a dip in the pool for a few hours. Ethan loves the pool, so that should be a great time.
Then, we are headed to NJ for the weekend to stay at Garrett’s Dad’s house (Grandpa Gil). Our friends are coming over for a barbecue and to go swimming in the pool. Good times!!!

I promise to post more often as soon as this weekend is over!

He does look heavier than he is. I need to search Atlanta for some fun activities like you do with him.
