United Colors of Love World Map

Raise your hand if you figured out which craft audition was mine earlier this week!!!

If you guessed United Colors of Love…..you were right!
And guess what?  It came in first place, which means I am now a contestant on So You Think You’re Crafty.   A lot of people thought I was some of the other projects, including the embroidery hoops and embroidered dress, which were fantastic!

This world map is going in the kids’ new playroom (which will hopefully be finished in a few months).  It took me about 2-3 days of working at night to complete the artwork.

I already had everything on hand, so it cost me nothing.
Mod Podge, paintbrush, tissue paper, cardstock, and heart cutter.
Oh, and a large canvas, of course.

Using the heart puncher, I cut out hundreds and hundreds of hearts in various sizes and colors.

I covered the canvas in torn up cream colored tissue paper and glued on with Mod Podge.

Then, I slowly but surely covered the entire canvas with all of the little hearts to form the shape of the continents.

I watched a lot of trashy tv during this process.

I also created 3D hearts to represent where I currently live in Pennsylvania and where I was born in Australia.
Look at all of those bright hearts!

I had so much fun with this project and I am already thinking of what I will do for Week 1 of the competition.
Topic is Paint.  So open ended!

So cool. I like the concept of geography as art, it creates a much more FUN portrayal of learning. Congrats on landing in first& becoming a contestant!

This is such an amazing piece. i am planning to use it in my baby’s nursery but with stars instead of hearts ;> i was just wondering how did you stick the hearts ? and did you use anything to seal the hearts so they wouldnt fall off ??

    • Welcome to the Mouse House May 26, 2013 at 1:14 pm #

Thank you! Stars would be super cool!

I used LOTS and LOTS of Mod Podge 😉 Glue them down with the mod podge and then use a ton of it over top to seal it! I would love to see pics if you ever do it!

Oh man, are you having any luck? It is definitely time consuming, but I spread it over over a couple of nights and watched some trashy tv during the process. I really can’t wait to see photos when it is done!

Wow this is an incredible idea! I’ve seen lots of map art pieces going around lately, but this takes the biscuit. My brother has a wall sticker of a typographic map in his office, it took a little patience to apply but was well worth it in the end, one of the quote Wall stickers from here I believe! Might have to try and make something similar for my office now.

I was wondering if you think the hearts would stick on the canvas as well without the tissue paper on it?????? We are taking your idea and turning it into an all school project. But we were thinking about just doing it on the white canvas.

    Thank you for your advice

I would think they would work! Just use lots of glue and you should be good!
