Guest Post: Winter Wonderland Decorations

I am so thrilled to have Courtney here today!  We have been friends since our sons were little and she is a gem.  Seriously.
A few years back, she made the best artwork for Ethan’s room…remember?

Greetings, friends and fans of Hayley! My name is Courtney and I am a stay-at-home mom, the  artist and crafter behind Quiet City on Etsy, and PTO enthusiast. I am here today to share a decorating project I did recently for my son’s school’s winter carnival.
Winter Wonderland is the major annual fundraiser at our school and I have been the chairperson of the decorating committee for two years. It is such a fun project and it has become the highlight of my year as an artist. I get a lot of help from fellow Parent Teacher Organization members and other volunteers when it comes to creation and installation; I could not do it without them!
For these two years, the signature decoration of the Winter Wonderland is a large-scale installation of tissue paper pom-poms strung from the ceiling at the main entrance and lining the hallway to the hub of the festival activities. We have also used cardboard cutouts of woodland creatures to guide the way to the festivities. (To read more about these decorations, please visit my blog within the week for a feature on those.)
I wanted to do something new this year in addition to the poms and animals so I decided on a few pre-lit artificial trees (decorated to reflect winter’s wonder instead of Christmas since the Winter Wonderland takes place in a multi-cultural school in January) placed in the entrance near the volunteer check-in table and super-popular photo booth.
One tree was decorated in blues and greens, another was dressed up in whites, and the third, my favorite, was a red and pink Valentine tree!

The blue/green and white trees were decorated mostly in ornaments from my personal collection because decorating our family Christmas tree IS MY JAM. They included many owls and other birds, plus squirrels, rabbits, swirls and stars, acorns, garlands, raffia and traditional matte, shiny and glittery orbs.

The Valentine tree featured pink and red orbs plus felt hearts, small tissue pom-poms and rolled paper roses. Extra pom-poms filled out the space underneath the tree.

This last photo shows me (right) with my friend and PTO cohort Gabby (left) after we worked on these trees for a total of about six hours. Pure pride and excitement right there! And all the work is so worth it; it is purely magical to see the students’ faces as they enter the school and see the Winter Wonderland transformation in their very own hallways.

You can view my work at Quiet City on Etsy and on my Facebook page. After a hiatus from writing online I have relaunched a blog where I talk about my art, family and other slices of life and I would love if you could visit me there! It’s new, so please stick around a while. If you happen to live in  Maine you can also shop for my Quiet City goods at Downtown Handmade and Vintage at 178 Lisbon Street in Lewiston.
Thanks for reading, and thanks to Hayley for having me! xoxo
