Gray and Yellow Playroom: The Reveal

Long ago in blogland, this room was my old craft space, until we moved my craft room down to the basement.

NOW, it is the kids’ upstairs playroom!!!  They have several areas in the house for toys, but this room is strictly for them and they LOVE it!

Grey/Gray and Yellow Playroom Reveal
(done on a MAJOR budget!)

The walls went from a light pink to a blue/grey
Paint color is by Sherwin Williams and named “Online”.
We painted a thrift store dresser ($30!)
The yellow dresser is the perfect spot to store toys
To the right of the dresser is a little area for playing dress up.
We are in the process of purchasing some costumes to add there.

Shelves above dress up area
I have never met a kid that doesn’t love bean bag chairs!
Perfect for TV viewing
Speaking of TV’s, we can’t be the only people left with a VCR, right?  The kids love watching VHS tapes and the best part is that we buy them for under 50 cents a piece at the thrift store:)

And yes, I painted the artwork above the TV… when Ethan was a baby… totally sentimental value!!
To the right of the TV area is a closet.
I call it the “closet of shame”.
Anyone remember that episode of Friends where people found out that Monica would pack her closets full of stuff in order to make her house look clean?
That might be what I do too.
Moving on.
The other side of the room has their table and chairs with access to a magnet board and of course their felt board that I made
(link to the felt board series HERE)

I love their artwork above the table.
I had each kid “paint” when they were almost a year old.
So cute

I made the curtains and I am loving the extra pop of yellow.

So, there you have it!  Our upstairs playroom.

Glad I got pictures because it will probably never look this clean again.  Thank goodness for closets 🙂

Very cute! I really like the framed finger painting, I’m going to have to steal that idea for sure.

  2. Jenn August 2, 2012 at 3:19 pm #

I love love love the dresser idea. I would have never thought to do that for toys but it’s so clever.
I love the framed art too. What a perfect addition to the room.

It looks great! We don’t have a VCR because it busted but I will be replacing it. VHS tapes hold up so much better than dvds. I don’t know why they messed with a good thing. The room looks fabulous!

  4. The Yorgus McGorgus Family August 2, 2012 at 3:48 pm #

LOVE a makeover on a budget…and NO, you are not the only one that still uses a vcr 🙂 we got so many vhs tapes for free…

I love your new room. It is kid-classy for sure. And you may be also one of the only ones that still owns a box like tv instead of a flat screen. I know because we JUST bought a flatscreen to replace our box tv, and it is our ONLY tv in the main living area. Hehe. I love a frugal friend.

  39. ~ Liz ~ August 12, 2012 at 12:33 am #

How adorable everything is! Lucky kids! That dresser is very similar to a smaller one I saw yesterday at our Goodwill for $40. I’m hoping it will get marked down again before anyone buys it and I can swoop in and score the great deal. I may be dreaming, but I see you got yours for $30. It could happen, right?

  42. Just Terrific August 14, 2012 at 4:10 am #

I LOVE the playroom! You’ve added just the right touches of sentimental things and have made them look so modern! My aunt had a whole bedroom suit like the dresser in the late ’60’s-early ’70’s. Very cool! You’re kids’ paintings are priceless.

BTW……I have a son, Ethan, and a daughter, Ashley (sounds similar to Ainsley).

  43. Kathleen August 17, 2012 at 4:42 pm #

Where did you get the fabric for the curtains? They would look fabulous in my newly painted robin’s egg blue sewing room!

I’vedone the same idea with the finger painting. depending on the room that needs artwork,I selected the colorsand oferred the kids a limited selection, and voila, a home made painted piece of kids’ art that matches the room, curtains, wallpaper, etc.
