Rug Decisions: Living Room and Dining Room

Remember when my living room and dining room finally got hardwood floors? Well, we love it and the furniture is finally back in.   Now, I need your help in deciding what kind of rugs to put under the dining room table and in the living room!

So, here is the living room.  There is a lot going on here and it is so asymmetrical (drives me absolutely crazy!)  I need/want to bring in some warmer colors such as burnt reds/oranges, browns, and greens.  (I will be making new window treatments for the bay window shortly)  However, I need something to “pop” in this room.  I am having a lot of trouble deciding on what to do for an area rug in here.  Any suggestions?

NOW, the dining room!  This room is actually fairly easy because it is a “blank slate”, but I would love some input!  Because it is so “blank”, it needs a lot of direction.  What are your thoughts on rugs?  I still haven’t really added accessories yet because I am waiting to buy a rug!

Thanks so much for any input!

go to the store and look for 2 or 3 rugs you like for each room and bring them home and try them in the room. if you love what you have found the buy it if not then go to a new store and try again. you can put them online so we can help to if you want. ang

I don’t feel very confident in this sort of thing so my selections could be way off but I’ll try anyway. 🙂

For the living room something like this http://www.target.com/p/target-home-tapestry-floral-rug-red/-/A-13711896 or this http://www.target.com/p/jacobean-floral-wool-rug-brown/-/A-13717177 has your colors. I know home goods also has a large variety of rugs but you can’t shop online with them.

Because the dining room is so blank I would go with something more graphic like http://www.target.com/p/target-home-floral-bell-hand-tufted-indoor-outdoor-rug/-/A-13976913 or http://www.target.com/p/target-home-medallion-rug/-/A-13596242 or http://www.target.com/p/target-home-medallion-rug-brown/-/A-13596243

I need something under my dining table and am going to make a herringbone ‘rug’ using a drop cloth and stencil or tape, and paint.

My suggestion is to look at your floor as a blank wall. If that was a wall…what color/pattern would you think would go well with it.

Questions to answer: Do you want it to disappear into the wood so that the rest of the room is showcased? Do you want people to notice the rug first? Do you want it to blend with the furniture?

After that, buy a few and bring them home. Or if you are tricky/tricky…take pictures of the colors and patterns and do a collage next to your pictures/on top of your pictures and play…

Good luck! I am stuck on window treatments. I NEVER have problems with my house, but I am approaching five years that I can’t make a decision about this house! It feels like our “final” house and want it just right!

Off the bat I would say something more on the dark side for the dining room to pick up the black from the picture frames and the chandelier. Right now the room seems a little top heavy because everything dark is in the upper half of it.
For the living room I could see something more mid-tone in warm shades with a smaller whimsical pattern. That room seems overall lighter than the dining room and should get something more playful, while the dining room could go with something more graphic.
Maybe this for the dining room: http://www.westelm.com/products/lattice-dhurrie-b856/?pkey=crugs-flooring
